They asked for it.
Well, Bush is coming out in strong support of the FMA. Some people, like Vodkadude think this is bad. I don't, and here's why.
Activists for Gay Marriage went too far, too fast. The Judicial Tyranny going on in Massachusetts was the tip of the iceberg. Once the idiocy in San Francisco started up, it became quite clear that if a Mayor was willing to break the law and effectively commit a felony for each same-sex marriage license issued, this sort of thing would go on endlessly. This is why attempting to enforce the defense of marriage act, as passed by Clinton, simply isn't going to work. Activist Judges are willing to dictate law. Public officials are willing to break it. So, Bush has decided to play hardball on this issue.
Will the FMA pass? No, probably not. In fact, even with the vast majority of Americans opposing same-sex marriage, I doubt it'll get a 2/3rds majority. But, that doesn't really matter ultimately, as I see this turning into a rather large backlash against the gay activists on many other levels.
Congratulations, boys and girls, you've probably just set your goals back by a good dozen years or two.
Stephen links to a Republican who is apparently not going to vote for Bush because of the FMA issue, and suggests that more will follow. I'm sure he's right. What he's not addressing, however, is that for every vote Bush loses over this, he's likely to get several more in support on the issue.
I don't care about same sex marriage in this context. My support of Bush revolves around but one thing:
America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people.
