Interesting point.
A caller on Hugh's show asked thusly on the topic of gay marriage: What's stopping two single straight guys from getting married, sucking up marriage benefits, and going on about their lives as they otherwise would?
Not a hell of a lot, and it opens an interesting can of worms. How do you prove someone is gay? You can't, at least not physically.
This issue is one of the rife many that exist with the concept, one which the Massachusetts wannabe Kings for a day are again trying to force on legislature, in effect dictating law to an equal branch of government.
I'm getting tired of this tyranny is A-OK so long as it works in my favor mentality held by the gay "rights" crusaders, even the otherwise intelligent ones such as Sullivan. And that, even among those who would otherwise support most gay issues, is starting to become a whole lot more of an issue than it previously has been.
Most Americans, especially the conservative sort, don't take kindly to having things rammed down their throats, especially when a given something amounts to Affirmative Action: Marriage Edition. The result, as I've touched on before here and elsewhere, is akin to something Mrs. Du Toit originally mentioned on the subject:
Reasonableness is called for. Baby steps. Broad, sweeping generalizations about those who are opposed to SSM just makes folks more stubborn. It's forced many folks (like myself), who are supportive of 90% of other homosexual rights issues, to stand with the folks at the other extreme. And to be perfectly frank, I don't like it over here, but that seems to be the only group to stand with. (And, I should add, while I'm over here, I'm getting an earful on a whole bunch of other issues. My "resist, resist, resist" warning systems are pretty good, but I'm sure there are cracks in my armor. Do you want a significant majority of reasonable folks left out with this side? I don't).
I detailed yesterday that any arguments about “equality” is patently absurd and false. What is ironic to me (well, ironic may be too strong a word), is that those on the left, who have asserted countless times that specific minority groups (race, age, or gender) may be given special perks (or held to lower or higher standards based on the group), for that crowd to suddenly scream FOUL when laws recognize separate, but equal designations is hypocrisy. Do you want the law to be blind to race, age, or gender or not? At least be consistent.
If The People want the marriage laws in their state to be changed, there is a process (long used and recognized) for bringing about that change.
